Unplugging = Good for Body . Brain . Soul

Hey, dear friends!

Sometimes you just KNOW when it's time to pretty much unplug from online's incessant pull.  And for me that's right about now!

October has found this single-tasker fairly focused on pawing through and re-organizing bins and drawers, file cabinets and closets, trunks and shelves.  Furniture has been moved or put out on the end of the driveway with a FREE sign on it.  The garbage cans overflow, goodies are passed to other family members, the shredder works overtime ... and the thrift shop will be happy when we drop by again tomorrow.

The coming weeks are filling fast with a bunch of online classes, long-anticipated {courtesy of covid} days with family and friends, random appointments ... and hopefully an adventure or two.  And so I'm stepping back from blogging for a bit so I can be fully present for whatever God has in store.

And while I'll miss connecting with you in this space, I've never regretted taking time away from screens and blogging.  Nothing revitalizes me more than living life away from the laptop.  It's good for body, brain, and soul.

Meanwhile, I'm happy to leave you with a bouquet of recent finds that have touched me deeply.  Check out the morning meditation app, a couple of truly outstanding podcast episodes and a few penned gems that are soothing, creative, rejuvenating, calming.

The musical benediction is the icing on the cake.

Loose Ends * June 2018 Edition

Welcome!

Grab a tall glass of something cool and sweet, put your feet up, and enjoy the bits and pieces I've corralled together for you as June wends its way to a close.

I don't know about you, but this month has ricocheted from peaceful serenity to joyous crazytown madness and is now beginning to head back to a blissful scenario where I can begin to gather my scattered thoughts together.

-  excursion  -

-  happiness  -

these words completely recalibrated my outlook ...
'The more I submit my desires to Jesus while letting go of outcomes, the more He seems to answer the deepest longings of my soul. His abundance always surpasses my imagination and fulfills the prayers I didn't even know I needed to pray.'

beyond anything I asked or imagined ...

We didn't expect my mom to be able to gather with all our grandchildren together in one place again.  But miracles happen and visiting with beloved Great-Ma for a few hours was, for sure, the highlight of our month.  Maybe the summer.  It just doesn't get better than this.

Loose Ends * The May 2018 Edition

At the end of every month, I happily pull together life's most recent personal bits and pieces ... the snapshots, the links, the discoveries, the resources, all the stuff I'd want to yak about if we could put our feet up and linger together over a cup of coffee.

If this is the first time we've met, I'm so glad you've stopped in!  You can subscribe here to get this newsletter {and my other writings} in your inbox.  And yes, if there's anything here worth sharing with those in your world, please do.

the braids

One of my few claims to fame is the heavy thick hair I've passed down to my daughters and their kids.  {My dad used to say I needed to walk through a door sideways because of my unkempt, wild-child mane.}  But these girls' rich gorgeous colors have nothing to do with me and everything to do with their ancestors on the other side of the family.

I only wish I had looked this good when I was in my teens ... and late 30s.

the song

During the last month or so, I've found myself singing 3 words repeatedly.  Every good thing, every good thing.  A simple sacrifice of praise for the smallest of God's favors in the midst of life's continued unexpected twists and turns.  I finally checked out You Tube to find out exactly what's been overflowing from my heart at the most random moments ...

the crunch

The bag of bland store-bought almonds weren't cutting it with me, so I found this recipe for Honey Glazed Almonds.  Don't forget the sea salt.  Too fabulously scrumptiously addictive.

the reads

I've read / skimmed through hundreds of posts this month and hands down these are the absolute must-reads I've been waiting to pass along to you.  Bookmark, share, do whatever you can with these gems.

the wandering

A few months after experiencing what felt like a ton of bricks cascading onto my foot, I am happy that I am now out and about, walking without limping, exploring odd little paths and abandoned shorelines and neighborhood trails.  Spring's late late late arrival only makes every outdoor pilgrimage even sweeter.

the porch

The back porch is in its final stages of construction, but unfinished ceiling and trim work couldn't keep me from starting to introduce two new pieces of furniture to a bunch of much loved tables, chairs, plants, magazines, candles, throws, and pillows relocated from just about every room of the house.

Before long, I'll be sharing more about the emergence of my new favorite place to hang out.

the clients

Nothing makes this counselor's heart soar like an unexpected serendipitous note from a former client.  Three women connected with me last week to let me know the gratitudes of a steady journey forward, rekindled married love, and a fresh start after a tumultuous divorce.  I praise God for His merciful, healing grace ... and the powerful imprint these treasured women have left on my heart.

and just because ...

In Which I'm Popping In For Just a Minute

Well, hello again, friends ~

Please don't call me a stranger.  It's just that I've ended up indulging in a bit of an unexpected spring break.  Unplanned, unannounced, yet quite needed.  And yes, enjoyed, I might add.

I'm sharing a bouquet of five favorite springtime posts from recent years.  Feel free to share if you'd like.  I wanted you to know I'm thinking of you this morning.  And promising I'll be back again soon.  I've got some good stuff lined up.

Promise.

Here Goes My Monthly Newsletter + Instagram Feed + FB Page + Gratitude Journal

Hey Springtime Friends ~

Spying any peaceful bluebirds nesting?  Catching a glimpse of random daffodils or tulips pushing their way through the earth's thawing surface?

Spring has officially sprung, finally ... and I know you're joining me in heaving a deep sigh of mingled relief and gratitude that the season of the relentless nor'easters is over and done with.

One can only hope.

I've been penning these end of the month posts since forever.  They're fun to pull together because they're personal and there's lots of pictures and resources ... and I don't have to drum up anything terribly profound or noteworthy to set before you.

Simply put, this is where I find myself the last week of each month.

I don't do any social media except LinkedIn ... that's where you'll find my ongoing reading link-list of anything and everything I find remotely fascinating.  I'm right there with all the goodies.  You need to be a LinkedIn member to read, but it's free to join and not at all difficult to set up your page.

And it's a very good move if you want to connect with others of like mind ... if you volunteer, if you're a writer, if you're in the workplace, if you're in ministry, if you're out and about.

Out of the 60+ links I've shared in March, these are the 8 I'm hand-selecting for you ...

On a recent late afternoon jaunt to an ocean beach disturbed by yet another storm's vicious high tides, we came across a large hunk of old bricks cemented together, probably an old well dislodged from its former hiding place up on the now eroding cliffs.  Ever curious, I attempted to prop it upright to get a better look ... and in the process it fell square on my right foot, crushing it into the sand.

Thankfully, I had on my $14 well-worn gray faux-Uggs which cushioned the impact.  And my ever patient husband admits that he had to try twice before he could lift the monstrosity off my foot so we could hobble half a mile back up the windswept beach to the car.

Let's just say that it's given that old phrase 'a ton of bricks' a startling new meaning.

Long story short, my foot quickly swelled up in a most unattractive fashion and has evolved into a hoof-of-many-colors, mostly propped up and iced the past 11 days.  X-rays show it's not broken.  I'm grateful, yes.  But let's just say there'll be no cute sandals, much-needed pedicures, or perhaps even a shoe that doesn't hurt for quite awhile.

Speaking of damaged feet {you can't make this stuff up!}, last summer, a grandchild ended up with a ginormous splinter in her tender little foot which took forever and a day to remove.  Trust me, it was a trauma for all within hearing range.  I swore that it was finally time to completely tear down the rotting deck with its shards of splintered wood that threatened anyone young / brave / foolish enough to walk on it unshod.

We're following through.  A three season porch is coming to be, thanks to my husband who gets by with a little help from his friends.  And much to my delight and ongoing suspicions that our backyard just might be a site of an old farmhouse dumping ground, a few very fun pieces of dishware, an 1850 bottle, and other interesting bits and pieces have come to light in the upheaval and digging.

I don't know what's more exciting ... the excavation's findings ... or that outdoor space that's destined to become my new favorite room?

I think it'll be the room.

'I have become clear about at least one thing: self-care is never a selfish act - it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have, the gift I was put on earth to offer others.  Anytime we can listen to true self and give it the care it requires, we do so not only for ourselves, but for the many others whose lives we touch.'
~ Parker Palmer

I honor my mom as we celebrate her 88th birthday.  She's a very private person who probably won't be all that excited if / when she spies this picture.  But she's the light of our lives, a godly, kind, never-a-complaint inspiration who keeps us all where we need to be, the gently powerful matriarch prayer warrior.  Three generations of her family and her seemingly endless supply of friends and fans all arise and call her bless-ed.

I'd love if you'd pray for her in this challenging season of her life ...

Bless your springtime, your Easter gathering, and your beloved people.

He is risen indeed ~

P.S.  I'm already chomping at the bit over our next Book Club Open House!  Mark your calendar for Thursday, April 19th and grab your copy of Adam McHugh's The Listening Life: Embracing Attentiveness in a World of Distraction!   As I hit the publish button, the Kindle edition is crazy-priced at only $3.99!

Please check out all the details ... Sneaking a Peek At Our Next Life-Saving Book.

And if you've never subscribed, now's the time and here's the place.

P.S.S.  Lord willing, we're going to be talking about the pitfalls of blogging in April ... the situations / emotions / decisions that trip us up or find us kind of vulnerable.  I'm not quite sure where we're going with this, I just know we're headed in that direction.  Give me some input, please!

The October Wordsmith

Hands down, October's one of my favorite months.

This month-in-review post is all about the daily joy and power and radiance of the written word.  This wasn't planned, it's just the way it unfolded.

Where would we be without reading and writing and all the encouragement that can pour forth and spill out from wise words shared with kindness?

A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.
Proverbs 25:11

the bookbag
Two brand new releases have graced my night table in recent weeks ... Tessa Afshar's Bread of Angels, a fictionalized story of the biblical Lydia, and Jan Karon's latest novel, To Be Where You Are.

Tessa is a talented weaver of biblical stories and cultural details, and while the dialogue sometimes comes across as a bit stilted, her books never disappoint.  I loved seeing Lydia's saga unfold as she courageously braved the challenges of patriarchal Roman culture and appreciated the imagined conversations with the Apostle Paul and friends when he was in Philippi {Acts 16}.

Set in the month of October, Jan's Mitford Series lives on with the next generation taking center stage.  The adventures of veterinarian Dooley and artist Lace unfold, even as old favorite characters still leave you smiling and shaking your head.  The author's trademark attention to detail make this charming, relaxing volume read like 'old home week.'

the journaling
'I'm asking for and agreeing to whatever is Your will.  I have no easy answers, just some opinions.  But I also know that Your ways are much higher than ours and those are the ways I want.

I want to stand awestruck at the way You open doors, the way You unfold the future ... I don't want to be the author or the designer, I want to be the listener, the observer, the one clapping on the sidelines.  I want You to wield the glue, the gold, the hammer and nails, the chisel, the clay.

There's great relief in not thinking I must have all the answers, knowing You do ... and to be in the place to offer safety and quiet, listening and discernment.  I take the pressure off myself to be the fixer-in-chief and hand it all over to you.

That's where I want to be ...'

the memorization
My husband and I are s l o w l  y memorizing Psalm 103 together ... in the King James version no less.  Looks like we're finishing up verse 4 and headed into 5.  Sometimes we recite it together, other times one quietly prays it aloud in the morning when waking or whispers it late at night while the other is drifting off to sleep.

After 41 years, I do believe this is a first!

the kindness
I've often said that readers' comments are often better than the post itself.  Like this one so laden with lovely grace from Barbara after reading the Unraveled guest post over at Lesley's place ...

'Isn't it hard when that last drop falls into your cup, breaks whatever surface tension you've maintained for who knows how long, and life spills out all over the place: disappointments, anger, anxieties, misunderstandings, and all those affronts we'd thought we'd forgiven - but obviously did not.  It's a cleansing of sorts, not especially pleasant for those around us, but we're probably all better for it in the end.  Love is acceptance and the good grace to understand what we need, when we need it.  What gifts to receive.  You've captured this very human time so well, reminding us of who we are and how we so often experience life in similar ways.'

the recommendations
Click right here {and be sure to bookmark!} for online reads I think are worthy of your time.  Frequently updated, you never know what you're going to find.  Promise.

This month's five star read?  Debby Hudson's Alcohol and the Church.

the emotions
Coming soon ... a little series about emotional health.  Springing forth from the infamous Unraveled saga, we'll be looking at how we can clearly identify and name our emotions.  Figure out what they're trying to tell us and learn to express them well.

What do we need to do to keep them from defining who we are?  And where's God in all this?  Stuff like that.

I have no clear cut map of where we're going to go with this, but I do believe that the Lord has something for us.  If there's some specific emotion / topic you want to see addressed, please let me know in the comments ... or grab my attention at lindastoll@juno.com.  I'd love to go there with you.

And be sure you subscribe before you run off so you won't miss out on the discussion!

31 Days * A Sampler Bouquet

October.

This is the month where hundreds and hundreds of bloggers burn the midnight oil and push their creative selves to the limit as they commit to hitting the publish button day in, day out.

31 Days is not a task for the faint of heart.  It takes a strong sense of calling, raw determination, and an overflowing passion to explore and savor one specific topic, wringing every last bit of goodness from its essence.

I plunged headlong into this writing challenge in 2012, 2013, and 2015.

Here's 4 reasons why.

This year I'm saying 'no thanks, no way' but I'm super happy to introduce you to 4 writers who are all-in, familiar faces around here in this, my online home.  I encourage you to go over to their places and check out their work ... you'll soon be able to capture the essence of who they are and what they prize.

31 Days for Caregivers ~
Andrew Budak-Schmeisser
He might be smack dab in the midst of fighting for his life, but nothing can keep this good man down.  If you're not a caregiver, you probably know someone who is.  Chances are you'll become one sooner or later.  Or you have a tender heart for a loved one battling terminal illness.  This is a series for you.

Redemption Stories ~
Debby Hudson
If ever we needed to hear testimonies of God's powerful grace at work, it's right about now.  Debby's talking about 'addiction and disease and hope and restoration' at The Salvation Army's Adult Rehabilitation Center where she ministers in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  Say 'amen' and join her there.

Sing to Jesus: 31 Days in the Psalms ~
June Caedmon
I'm using June's daily exploration of this beloved book as my go-to devotional guide this month.  I know of no better way to start or finish your day.   Beautiful.

31 Days of Kintsugi ~
Lesley @ Life in the Spacious Place
Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with precious metals, and in the process, creating something of loveliness and value.  Lesley's focus is on 'God's work in our lives and how He can create beauty even in the midst of our brokenness.'

My lovely Scottish friend has invited me to guest post during her series.  Keep an eye out for On Being Unraveled ... and Re-Knit Together.

Last but not least ...

morning invitations * a 31 Days gathering {2015}
This series was born out of my own craving for creating some sort of steady grace-filled morning rhythms after living through six months of overwhelming choices, great big changes, and sorrow upon sorrow.  I even included weekly worksheets to help you tend to your soul, body, home ... and use of screens!

I actually thought about publishing morning invitations as a little guidebook, but the whole idea was more than daunting and I never followed through.  Yet I feel the urge to put this series on the table one more time ... and I hope that if you find it helpful, you'll share it with your social media fans, even if it is a year old!

*

And the winner of Jeremy Camp's brand new CD The Answer is Carolyn!  Congrats ... and welcome to our little community!

May this weekend offer each and every reader sweet rest for body and nourishment for soul ~
