But ask the animals, and they will teach you,

or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you;

or speak to the earth, and it will teach you,

or let the fish in the sea inform you.

Which of all these does not know

that the hand of the Lord has done this?

In his hand is the life of every creature

and the breath of all mankind.

Job 12:7-10

'Every part of creation, from the smallest of insects to the mountains in all their grandeur, proclaims the unspoken glory of God.  Every living creature, rock, grain of sand, and mountain stream was created for a specific purpose.  God wants to use the world around us to declare His glory, goodness, and love for us.  May we take the time to open our eyes and hearts, to slow down for a minute and behold the beauty of our God in all that He has made.'

Stop for one moment and step outside.  Yes, right now.  Look around and breathe deep.  Close your eyes and listen.  What is God's handiwork whispering about our Creator?

What are you writing these days?

'I've always believed in the therapeutic value of writing.  At a very early age, I realized that I think better with a pen in my hand.  I'm not a journal keeper, but for most of my life I've been a champion notetaker, documenting everything ... The scratch of a Pilot Precise V5 roller pen feels pleasingly analog in a relentlessly digital world, as if I were knitting something - and in a way I am.  The physical act knits concepts together in my memory and makes them part of a whole.

The cool thing is, research backs this up: Studies reveal that when we write things down by hand, we're better able to recall that info later.  And as both devoted diary keepers and brilliant novelists know, writing helps knit ourselves back together, too ... If we read to know the world, we write to know ourselves.  When we put our experiences down on paper, we make meaning out of them, and when we share them, we invite others to not only feel what we felt but find themselves in our stories.'

*
I've always found satisfaction in putting pen to paper.  All those jumbled up bits and pieces swirling 'round my brain somehow begin to make sense when seen in black and white.  Random thoughts magically come together, ideas and images join forces, thoughts and plans and brainstorms happily rub shoulders, relieved to find themselves as kindred spirits heading in the same direction.

And if the process unfolds well, a spark may slowly ignite something of value or become a tool that keeps life moving down the right track.

For years I journaled until I found it cumbersome, repetitive, and depressing.  But I find writing out prayers to be a powerful experience.  And grateful to have 35 years of notes scrawled in the margins of my Bible.

I do love a shopping list on the back of an envelope, a to-do list on the left side of my desk, a good quality wall calendar.

The convenience of texting has gotten in the way of hand written notes and cards.  I'm trying to head back to that gracious, old-fashioned kind of correspondence.  You, too?

These days I'm toting around one of those stenographer's pads to keep ministry thoughts, notes, plans in one place.  Actually the one I'm using right now was my Mom's, who never met a notepad she didn't love.

And you already know that blogging's in my blood.  I'm sure I never would have made it through the hard transitions and deep grieving and that awful season of covid without its faithful rhythm and the community that's emerged from it.

Thank You, Jesus.

Along the way, a few people have encouraged me to write a book, but I can't even imagine.  The stress of it all!  Ugh.  Writing brings me life and hope and satisfaction.  Heading toward any kind of publication would drain me dry.

So ... what are you writing this week?  If you've got samples or links, I'd love for you to share with the rest of us.  What's working for you just might prime the pump for the next person.

'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free,
'Tis the gift to come down where I ought to be;
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.

When true simplicity is gained,
To bow and to bend we shan't be ashamed;
to turn, turn, will be my delight.
Till by turning, turning we come round right.
Joseph Brackett

I can't wait to hear about your Thanksgiving week, the simple gifts you've given and received, your thoughts as Advent begins, and all little miracles that have come from the hands of our gracious God ...

On Becoming Like Nancy Drew

The minute we walked into this house I knew it had our name on it.

The living room ceiling was two stories high, there were skylights and tons of windows all over the place.  It was smaller, lighter, and brighter than where we were coming from.  It was a bit like walking into a fishbowl.  I could see us living here.  The place had the bones.  It was us.

I was enchanted.

The minimalist-collector in me decided early on that we'd only hang stuff that I absolutely couldn't live without.  An print of an early Cape Cod map.  The 'formal' photo of six little grandkids in bare feet.  A few vintage needlework samplers.  A beachscape or three.  A hooked rug created by a dear friend.  And a portrait of my great-grandparents, Henrietta and Luigi.

Pretty much everything else was given away ... or languishes in the basement seven years later.

Fast forward a few years.  I came across this sign in a little shop down in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.  And I couldn't grab it fast enough 'cause I knew I wanted it hanging in our home.

I'd been convicted of my tendency to whine.  Complain.  Grumble.  I'm sure it was tiring for those who happened to be in the vicinity.  The Spirit was definitely nudging me to acknowledge my attitude problem and choose to purposefully respond to life in ways that were Christ-honoring instead of reacting like a two year old to whatever didn't suit my fancy.

To become like a spiritual Nancy Drew, looking intently for every small clue, each hidden treasure, holding every discovery up to the light, and rejoicing right out loud at yet another found gem.

Purposefully cultivating a grateful heart hasn't been as hard as I thought.  To notice all the simple gifts God sprinkles through each hour and to name them one by one.  Sometimes I sound like Pollyanna, I suppose.  But truly, my heart fills easily these days with gratitude and praise.  Because there's always some kind of 'God-wink' waiting around the next corner as I live with expectancy that He will make His lovingkindness known to His children.

And as I focus on purposely noting and naming those blessings, my propensity to be a whiny-pants fades a bit more.

I pray myself to sleep each night, reciting every good thing that God has sent my way and offering it right back to Him.  Therein is peace.  Calm.  Hope.

On the Porch #24 * Thanksgiving Edition

When morning gilds the skies,
My heart awaking cries:
May Jesus Christ be praised!
Alike at work and prayer
To Jesus I repair:
May Jesus Christ be praised!

Let earth's wide circle round
in joyful notes resound:
May Jesus Christ be praised!
Let air and sea and sky
from depth to height reply:
May Jesus Christ be praised!

Be this, when day is past,
of all our thoughts the last:
May Jesus Christ be praised!
The night becomes as day
when from the heart we say:
May Jesus Christ be praised!

Wow, gang!  It's the weekend before Thanksgiving!

A big ol' turkey?  Endless football games?  Pumpkin pie smothered in whipped cream?  The parade?  Church service?  A quiet solitary day?  A pre-made lasagna?  A visit to the care facility?  Grandma's traditional recipes?  Serving at the community meal or soup kitchen?  Board games or a movie or a brisk walk?  Maybe a tryptophan-induced snooze to fortify you for very early Friday morning shopping?

{I will do my part to make the festivities even more out of hand by heading out on the road with 53.4 million of my closest friends.}

Whatever floats your boat, I hope that all is calm and bright wherever you find yourself ... and that your people are healthy and fortunate enough to gather together.

Thankfully, our 'people' don't have to be related by blood.  And traditions do well to be flexible and expansive, free to change from one year to the next as we're sensitive to the needs of those around us.  Our 'people' are those we reach out to, those who God has put on our hearts to enfold into this day ... and hopefully into our lives.

Sometimes that enfolding is completely accidental and long lasting like it is for Jamal and Wanda.

Could be that overwhelming grief nudges you to upend tradition by roasting marshmallows over the fire instead of going around the table saying what you're thankful for.

There's not a gathering that wouldn't benefit enormously from a Tech Shabbat.

And an extra dose of kindness if strong differences on faith, covid, or politics is the elephant in the room.

Hopefully this ridiculous kitchen disaster won't happen.

For sure, these chocolate covered strawberry turkeys look like a whole lot more fun. {J - can we make these?!}

Meanwhile, grab the tissues for this song.

And I'm offering this prayer up to heaven yet again.

It never fails to amaze me at the odd ways tender sadness and sparkling joy mingle, how the bittersweet ache and hearty laughter truly can go hand and hand ... and how the craziness of it all can kick off an onslaught of gratitude that we simply must speak out loud.  It's how He made us.

Bless your grateful heart, bless your open door, bless your hospitable spirit ~

Notice the Blackberries

Yet there shall be left therein gleanings,
as the shaking of an olive-tree,
two or three berries
in the top of the uppermost bough,
four or five in the outmost branches
of a fruitful tree,
saith Jehovah, the God of Israel.

In that day shall men look unto their Maker,
and their eyes shall have respect
to the Holy One of Israel.

Isaiah 17:6-7

🍇

Propped up in bed this morning, savoring a morning SoulSpace encounter with the Lord, my eyes opened and settled on a sweet little patch of blackberries sprinkled on the faded quilt.

I've got a thing for blackberries.  Don't ask me why.  Cherries, too.  But that's another post.

Anyway, I've been wrapping myself up in this well-loved comforter for years and never noticed this winsome pattern on this particular square.

And I was reminded yet again of the importance in noticing what's right in front of our noses.  Tiny details sprinkled through our days that serve to give a spark of joy, satisfaction, or whimsy.

One of the benefits of the two day Storm Bomb power outage was that most of the time our electronics were fairly useless.  Candlelight glowed in the rooms, the fireplace came to life.  There was plenty of time to finish up a small stack of books that had been patiently waiting attention.  Conversation over warmish take-out was cozy because no one was going anywhere.

And then there was lots of outdoor time when the rain and winds finally washed out to sea.  Cleaning up storm damage and putting the gardens to bed for the winter.  Heading indoors to putter and rearrange and indulge in all those homekeeping tasks I love even as the sunlight quickly dimmed.

I washed storm door windows in the dark.

When all was said and done, my Fitbit proclaimed 11,000+ victorious steps for the day.  The power flickered on and off ... and finally made up her mind to stay with us for good, just in time to check the fridge for salvageables and head off to bed.

I'm giving thanks for all the little details God has allowed me to notice these last few days.  All is well.  What unexpected gifts has He sent your way this week?

A Bunch of Autumn Snapshots

This is the day the Lord has made;
we will rejoice and be glad in it!
-  Psalm 118:24  -

🍃

Fall's shimmies on in, slow and graceful yet persistent.  And even though I usually drag my feet when it's time to bid farewell to summer, I'm welcoming this fresh season with a good measure of serendipitous enthusiasm and wide open arms.

The sun is shining all golden and warm, a cool breeze makes its way through when the clouds float by, the birds are going crazy feathering their nests, their songs often insistent, sometimes fleeting.  The leaves around here stubbornly refuse to don their autumn hues yet being out and about is an absolute pleasure.

A brisk morning walk never seemed so delightful, so right, so welcome.  A late afternoon stroll down the beach so mandatory, so serendipitous, so therapeutic.

Despite life's very real and valid concerns, I'm sleeping better than I have in years.

There's some reorganizing projects going on, a few pieces of furniture to be hauled around, a stack of books to settle down with, a decision or two awaits.  I'm finally eating healthier instead of randomly grazing at will.  A new door is opening, we gather with friends and visit with Mom, yet another family member looks to be emerging from covid's awful grasp.

God is good.

Yes, work and family and those screens and homekeeping tasks beckon us to stay inside and busy.  But when at all possible, let's not linger too long indoors.  Let's do what we need to do and then head outside.  For we know that before long we'll decide that lingering indoors in front of a warm fire is the only sane choice to make.

These are the good old days.  And we will rejoice and be glad in them!

Now ... if I can only find some of those elusively serendipitous blue pumpkins ~

66 Gratitudes + 7 Giveaways

It's birthday time!  Cue the confetti, grab your paper hat, and let's celebrate!

Like many of you, I believe some annual milestones are worth noting ... and others deserve to be casually ignored or conveniently forgotten.

65 years?  A real clunker, complete with a harsh, whiny post that begged to be re-titled 3 hours after it was published.

63 Years?  A serendipitous LOVE fest.

60 Years {the new 30}?   An enthusiastic ode to my 60+ year old friends who made aging look like a walk in the park.

What to do with #66?

The word gratitude quickly comes to the forefront.  This mindset doesn't come naturally to many of us.  It necessitates a distinct change of heart, a Christ-centered focus, and most certainly a moratorium on whining, self-pity, and grumbling.

So straight from my serendipitous  to yours, here's 66 snippets of gratitude randomly gathered from six years of blog posts ... and a first come, first served 7 book giveaway.

I will praise the LORD at all times.
I will constantly speak His praises.
{Psalm 34:1}

1.  My inner gratitude list is long, and certainly flourishing far better than my sandy backyard garden.

2.  An outpouring of gratitude for daily joys isn't just for the month of November.

3.  Gratitude waits patiently, expectantly, hopefully, just waiting to be scooped up, claimed with joy, and celebrated!

4.  It's no secret that I'm especially grateful for those who jump into the ongoing dialogues on a regular basis, complete with gusto, wisdom, and a hefty sense of humor.

5.  I'm so grateful at the way the Lord orchestrated all the moving parts together again.

6.  I am concerned, even as I'm so grateful for her strong commitment to Christ.

16.  Contentment has emerged as a lovely gift borne from the hours of reflection, morning devotional time invested with the Lord, a purposeful focus on naming and speaking gratitude day in and out.

17.  I'm grateful for every minute of it all.

18.  God, accept the praises that rise full and strong from hearts that overflow with a joyous gratitude.

19.  And I've just gotta tell Him how deep and wide my love and gratitude flows.

20.  I'm especially grateful for all those who took a bit of their valuable time to hang around and chat when you certainly could have been somewhere else.

🎂

21.  I couldn't be more delighted ... or grateful.

22.  When we choose to tend to our souls, bodies, homes, and screens in ways that are winsome and life giving, we will be fortified with a spirit of peace, confidence, and gratitude as the day continues to evolve.

23.  Breathe deep and smile with gratitude each step of the way.

24.  His Word will take you back to that place where gratitude abounds, even in the midst of the ugliest or saddest of circumstances.

25.  And for God's peaceful, steady presence, I'm grateful.

26.  Gratitude waits patiently, expectantly, hopefully, just waiting to be scooped up, claimed with joy, and celebrated!

27.  Ever and always, I overflow with gratitude and praise God for His faithful loving care.

28.  And gratitude for our home, the haven that over time has become our space, our place.

29.  These posts are all about noticing what's going on around us and capturing and claiming gratitude as we do so.

🎂

30.  This imperfect heart overflows with gratitude for childhood memories way back in the day ... and this, the here and now.

31.  I want to offer you my simple but heartfelt gratitude for spreading the word that single women in the church don't have to feel isolated, and that together, we can join hearts and hands to spark a fire that can change the world for Christ, no matter what our marital status.

32.  You hope that someday there'll be a Phase 2, but if that doesn't pan out, you'll still be overflowing with gratitude over what God's allowed you to accomplish.

34.  He leads.  We follow.  Our souls overflow with unspeakable gratitude.

37.  And I am so very grateful for the community that God is growing and nurturing in this place.

38.  Gratitude for prayer increases yet again.

39.  There's always something to spark gratefulness, many occasions to breathe fragrant prayers of thanksgiving, and multiple reasons to count those blessings that are heaped up right and left, just begging to be embraced.

40.  List 3 gratitudes each day.

🎂

41.  Even in this unsettling season, there are always things to be grateful for.

42.  Keep a little gratitude journal.

43.  I know you're joining me in heaving a deep sigh of mingled relief and gratitude that the season of the relentless nor'easters is over and done with.

44.  We are overflowing with an abounding gratitude laced with peace-filled joy.

45.  Mom's expression of simple gratitude has stayed with me as I've been puttering in our own home in recent days.

46.  If ever we needed to speak gratitude it would be right about now.

47.  As we journal through weird seasons we claim gratitude for all God is inviting us to in the midst of the unsteadiness.

48.  How very good it is to rejoice in the dailyness of those simple grace moments that bring a smile, a tug of gratitude.

49.  Being fully present to another soul requires 4 gratitude-fueled distinctives that have been cultivated over time.

50.  I'm grateful for what God's doing as I head into yet another year of writing online.

🎂

51.  The craziness of life can kick off an onslaught of gratitude that we simply must speak outloud.

52.  The exhausting decorating marathons are gone ... instead, a peaceful kind of gratitude holds center stage.

53.  May abiding gratitude and endless praise be our by-words.

54.  To say I'm grateful would be an understatement.

55.  God honors our sacrifice of praise and propels us forward as we purposely cultivate gratitude in our minds and hearts ... and speak it out loud and often.

56.  We are grateful for a place to lay our heads that's safe and warm.

57.  Gratitude.  Embracing it.  Speaking it.  Living it out.  First in our own souls and then in conversations with whoever God brings on our paths.

58.  My heart is filled with gratitude for you, wise and cherished readers.

59.  We crawl out of our endless self-absorption and begin to glimpse new rays of hope, sweet whispers of life, opportunities to reach out, and answered prayers that await our grateful attention.

60.  And I am forever grateful for Your never ending love and Jesus' sacrifice.

🎂

61.  We claim gratitude in the discoveries of  'whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, excellent, or praiseworthy {Philippians 4:8}.

62.  Perhaps joy, gratitude, and gentle memories flood your soul.

63.  To say that I'm grateful for the gift of who God's shaped my husband to be would be a ridiculously vast understatement.

64.  When someone gives us a gift, it usually brings us a gratitude-laced joy.

65.  And for God's peaceful, steady presence, I'm grateful.

66.  And the huge sense of relief and the deepest gratitude that's emerged from following Him repeatedly through the next open door outweighs the myriad of frustrations, disappointments, and sadness that have woven their way into this year.

He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
{Psalm 40:3}
