The Late Summer Somethings

Late August is a lovely season all its own.

We're still savoring the lazy days of summer, yet can't help but think about our rapidly filling September calendars.  Even while we're sweating to death, the decorating blogs are in full-fledged autumn mode and we're shopping for warmer clothes, pumpkin candles, and piles of {expensive} school supplies.

Let's all take a deep breath.

There's no rush to careen ahead at full speed.  Let's purpose to be fully present in this moment.  To appreciate the simple joys that are still within reach.  Flip flops and tee shirts.   An ice cream cone, a walk in the woods, a leisurely lunch with a friend, a bike ride, a day trip, a swim.

For these days will be gone in the blink of an eye.

So go ahead ... grab yourself an iced tea and head out the screen door toward the hammock.  It's been awaiting your leisurely arrival.

  2. Creative: the watermelon sculpture. Inspiring: the thankful quote. Decadent but not enticing: the donuts (I don't eat them). :) Loving nature: the beautiful scene of the lake and trees. Here in Indiana this week: 90+ temps all week with humidity in the sky high region. But life is good because God is always present.

    1. Yeah, it's a hot one this week. Too hot for biking?

Your last line hits home for me, Bill - 'life is good because God is always present.'

And all God's people said AMEN!

    1. Your wise and grace-filled words will impact most all of us women who read them. Our society, our culture has been too harsh with their expectations.

I'm just grateful to be healthy and try to do what I can to stay that way. But a size 6? I never ever saw it!

  5. Summer's coming to an end,
and where did it all go?
    What do cooler days portend?
Will life grow staid and slow?
Not for me, and never here,
    even though the heat is gone;
    I'll just have another beer,
    and we'll be rocking on
    with a purple Mohawk
    and homemade Bowie knife,
daring those who talk the talk
to come and live the life
in which the banishment of reason
pays no heed to change of season.

  6. What creativity is on display with that watermelon, Linda! And yes, there is always something in each day for which we can be grateful. Thanks for cheering me with your lovely photos, my friend.

  7. I've noticed a lot of fall decorating photos, too. I'm not ready to rush the last bit of summer--though I do look forward to crisp fall breezes in several weeks. I love the donuts at the beach photo! And the calm, reflective waters. I enjoyed several of the links. I'm looking forward to the book club. And you have me intrigued about Friday!

      Not going to happen.

      See you Friday!

  11. It's amazing--the power of photos. I so enjoyed these, Linda, and found an instant smile with the watermelon and roses. Sounds odd, probably, but there was a different measure of happiness in each one. Interesting!

Keep reading and snapping those photos.

I'm not ready to say good-bye to summer yet, but have picked up fall-related items (mostly pumpkin decor. LOL) as I see them now, because I won't be going out as much in September...

    Thanks for the visit!

  23. I love your Four Somethings posts, Linda. They seem to come so easily to you, which actually encourages me when I read them because mine do not! Speaking of encouragement, Sarah Bessey’s article was very timely and convicting for me. My issue is something besides drinking, but God is using the process she went through to help me sort some things out for myself. I’m so glad you shared it. :-)

    1. Yes, I thought Sarah Bessey's story to be vulnerable, straight-shooting, and much needed. It was first published a few years back and it was my favorite online read of the year.
