SOMETHING LOVED / glimpses

|

SOMETHING READ / questions
'I think our calling is found in discovering where we are uniquely gifted and positioned to reveal God’s character and bring about healing, hope, and restoration in our lives and relationships.  What makes your heart race?  What aspects of God’s kingdom do you long to see more of in this world?  What injustices do you ache to be made right? Your calling is most often embedded in those very places where your heart is naturally drawn toward and broken by.'
Melissa Brownback

SOMETHING LEARNED / follow-up
Remember On Marshmallows, Mushrooms, and Monotasking?  Well in the seven weeks since I wrote that essay, I've amped up the healthy eating, embraced listing/bunching/batching tasks, and bravely ventured forward in some med tweaks suggested by my doctor.  Without any apologies, I'm claiming extra grace and space for a few days before and after large gatherings, deep conversations, and significant events.

(Tim and I hosted a potluck supper for our church's Stephen's Ministry team of 20 this past weekend and it was a zero-stress, sheer joy occasion.  I loved every minute - the quiet readying of the house, the gathering itself, the slow process of tidying up.  I felt the calming rhythm of the Spirit's kind presence before, during, and after.)

I'm noticing that on the whole my mind is clearer, although don't be surprised if I ask your name if there's a lot going on in my head or commotion happening around us.  Many have agreed with me on this name thing, with great relief to know they're not the only one.  I do believe that putting difficult subjects on the table ... in writing and empathetic conversation ... serves as a path toward greater clarity, fresh options, and wise choices.

All glory to the Helper and the Healer of our souls.  Every moment we gently cradle is only by His grace.  Jesus is The Name that never escapes my heart or slips my mind.

SOMETHING AHEAD / prayer

Now it's your turn to talk about what's made your September memorable!  How God has surprised you, what He's been whispering.  Is He inviting you to something deeper, more substantial?

🍂

This week.

All of a sudden, it was fall.

In the blink of an eye.  Just like that.

Summer is over and done.  And I couldn't be happier.

1.  the hood
I often throw a sweatshirt over my shoulders when heading out in the evenings.  But this week I actually put it on ... and pulled the hood up.  Brrr.

2.  the jeans
I slipped on a pair for the first time in 5 months.  They still fit.  Hello long pants again.

3.  the acorns
The oaks are lavishly dispensing the fruit of their labors.  Walk barefoot outside at your own risk.

4.  the fuzzy throw
We grabbed a one in the middle of the night and spread it on the bed.  Next step?  Flannel sheets.  A few weeks later?  The electric blanket.

5.  the closed signs
We craved some ice cream.  I lost count how many shops we drove by before we found one open.  The party's over.

6.  the biscuits
I just had to make biscuits for supper.  No question in my mind.  It's been months since I baked.  And oh they were so delicious.

7.  the slipper socks
I quietly grabbed a pair as soon as I rolled out of bed.  I couldn't get them on quick enough.

8.  the morning candle
I lit my first of the season.  Its cozy scent and flickering flame warmed the dawn with its glow, a perfect lead-in to a quiet devotional time.

9.  the tea
For the first time since late spring, I grabbed one of my favorite mugs and filled it with steaming Earl Gray laced with a hefty drizzle of honey.

Good weekend to you, friends!

We've set foot in seven states this week.  We've partied hard for three days with dozens of family members.  Experienced the peace of farm country and spotted apple orchards groaning with fruit.  Indulged in all kinds of decadent food.  Cheered our lungs out at a granddaughter's basketball volleyball game.  And slept in three different beds along the way.

It's just plain surreal to find ourselves back home again.  And stranger still is that we've bought our first pumpkins even as the temps tickle 100 degrees.

Sometimes life is just plain weird, a bit topsy-turvy.  It's why I realize again how grateful I am that God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit never changes like shifting shadows.  Or seasons.  Or temps.  He's the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Embracing this truth gives us peace.

Tim and I have been musing on the lessons gleaned in re-doing our kitchen.  And you're talking about rotted floor boards, an upcoming she-shed, a hoped-for pergola, the relief of one stop shopping, and a garage turned into a dream kitchen.  Grab your iced tea and head on over to join the conversation.

And remember, friends, when all is said and done, no matter how weird life seems in this transitional season, please know without a doubt that Jesus is absolutely for you.

Good breezy afternoon from the porch.  The winds are blowing hard and it feels almost tropical which is kind of odd since we're here in New England.  The calendar says it's summer yet whiffs of fall somehow seem present.  We're left wondering whether to reach for a sweatshirt or open every window wide.  Go figure.

I seldom ask God why questions anymore.  I'm guessing because I've seen Him so faithful.  Found security in leaning into the fact that He never changes like shifting shadows.  Have come to implicitly trust His character and His lovingkindness and His justice.  Experienced those mercies that blossom fresh every morning.

Don't get me wrong.  There's much about life I can't begin to understand.  And evil that I don't want to comprehend.  Who can even begin to figure out what's going on these days?  Yet there's a peace that comes in releasing all we can't control, fix, or maneuver.

Which is just about everything.  And everyone around me.

Why questions take us in circles.  They leave us hanging.  They go no place productive.  They tend to easily become whiney and demanding and especially tiresome to unfortunate bystanders who find themselves held hostage by their hand-wringing companions.

But I do like the what questions when talking with God.  They are laced with a positive expectancy.  Like what are You trying to teach me?  What are You inviting me to?  What miracles are You going to unleash in this mess here and that disaster over there?

🍂

Jesus specialized in asking the hard questions.  They were often simply spoken but they weren't easy for people to answer because their response had the potential to turn their lives inside out.  And those kind of conversations can be incredibly unsettling because who might I be if I said a completely sold out, unfettered yes to Him?

🍂

As we gradually transition into autumn, I find myself leaning forward to hear your stories, pick your brains, and glean from your wisdom.  Not because I'm nosy and intrusive but because the older I get, the more I find myself curious and inquisitive.

The upcoming end of a season is a liminal space, the perfect time to figure out what's going on inside our heads and hearts, an opportunity to re-evaluate our commitments and calendars.  Done well, with a bit of time and space around us and in the company of God and those who can help us discern, this can be a gently-paced, stress-less process of discovery and renewal ... as opposed to the typical frantic mad dash scenario that comes crashing in after Labor Day.

🍂

I do love asking what questions.  (Some people relish this and others wish I'd simply go away.)

Like what saved your life this summer?   What have you been dreaming of?  Creating?  And what are you embracing and anticipating?

What Scripture has captured your heart?  What's your biggest fear?  Your deepest passion?  What's making you sad?

What's stirring inside your soul?  What do you miss ... and what are you completely done with?

Let's talk.  I promise to listen well and not get all bossy with you.  And if you have questions for me, I'll try to answer them.

On Marshmallows, Mushrooms, and Monotasking

🍄

'It's amazing how many marshmallows there are,' I enthused as Tim and I tromped over the damp woodchipped lawn.  I had just kicked a great big mushroom right off its hinges as we headed off for a morning walk.

I caught myself.  'MUSHROOMS!,' I shouted, 'MUSHROOMS!'  And started laughing as he rolled his eyes.

He's gotten used this.  Those closest to me have.  They might patiently wait for me to figure out the missing word, ignore my misnomer, or decide to fill in the blank.  If I say, 'you know, ol' what's his name' or 'what's her face' they're usually able to track with me.

Kind of like a game of charades.  But this is no game.  And it doesn't end after a 20 minute round or two.

🍄

Before the month ends, there'll be more candles than ever on my cake.  68 is looming and I don't mind telling you that I'm not a big fan of the aging process.  Physically, mentally.  Truth be told, from time to time it unsettles me.  A whole lot.

YET ...

God hasn't given us a spirit of fear.  But power, love, and a sound mind.
(2 Timothy 1:7)

Plus a sense of humor.  And the capacity to re-invent ourselves, pivot a bit, and prepare for unknown transitions ahead, knowing with confidence that He's already written the rest of our own uniquely personal story.

🍄

Let's face it.  We're all dying daily.  We don't like to hear that, but it's our reality as human beings.  Yet it serves no healthy or holy purpose dwelling on worst case scenarios or getting caught up in the downward spiral of 'what if this' and 'what if that.'

For awhile, I've quietly claimed the desire to live a 'no regrets' lifestyle so that when all is said and done, I can be at peace knowing that I did the best I could do at the time.  For me, that's required the hard work of relinquishing dreams, confessions of sin, changes of attitude, the giving of forgiveness, ability to say 'sorry, no, thanks,' embracing new habits, increased attention to strengthening my faith and my health.

And now in this season, to gracefully re-invent how I do life, making some major tweaks to well-worn, deeply ingrained routines that don't serve me well anymore.

My goal is to become increasingly mindful and attentive to the conversation, situation, or task right in front of me.

🍄

That brings me to monotasking.

I'm embracing it.  Aiming to bring my full attention to one conversation at a time.  Finishing one task at a time.  Reading one book at a time.  Straightening one room before moving to the next.  Batching blogging stuff, bill paying, or information seeking and then shutting down the computer.

The secret is completing the next right thing before moving on to the next right thing.

*  An old fashioned paper checklist is my life saver these days.  There's great satisfaction in listing every must-do (small and big) and then crossing off one item after another, knowing that I'm not wasting time trying to remember something that's totally slipped my over-crowded mind.

*  Silencing my phone and keeping it out of sight is starting to keep me from endless random surfing which I swear has short-circuited my brain.

I used to be able to multi-task with the best of them.  It's not my preference anymore.  And most days there's no need to.  Accepting this reality has lifted remaining self-expectations to juggle a whole bunch of balls at the same time.  And in this new process, my body is calming, my brain is clearing, and my soul is more attentive to hearing the still small Voice of the One I rely on and love best of all.

In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.
Isaiah 30:15

It's like God is using my need to leave multi-tasking mastery behind so that I can become the best version of my soon-to-be 68 year old self.  And able to focus on what I've always loved best ... meaningful one-on-one conversations.  Reaching out and listening well and responding in ways that will bring some kind of encouragement to the soul right in front of my nose.

And yes, continuing to write something (hopefully) of value and connect with you right here in this space.

Read more about monotasking here.  These days #4 - #6 hit home for me.

When all is said and done, there's no one-size-fits-all to the aging process (or anything else for that matter).  I'd love to hear what's working for you ... or what you've learned by watching others a few steps ahead of where you find yourself.

I don't know about you, but I've been through lots of transitions that I never want to experience again.  But autumn's gentle rhythm, its compelling rhyme, its steadying cadence, its awaiting invitations?

There are the transitions that breathe fresh life, that kick off brand-new routines, that open doors to long dreamed of opportunities that wait around the next corner.  These are the graces that let you know that the earth keeps spinning, that life goes on, that all will be well.

We're experiencing it here, now.  It starts when we awake.  Instead of throwing off the covers, we reach to pull them up closer and linger in the cozy overnight cocoon we've created for ourselves ... even as we vow to dig those gently fraying flannel sheets out of the back of the closet and get them tucked over and on to the awaiting mattress.

We start our days by donning the worn, warm robe and wonderfully fleecy socks instead of a tee-shirt and shorts.  And when we stumble to the kitchen, we grab a favorite mug and brew a 'hot cuppa,' rather than reach for a glass to fill with icy cold juice.

As we prepare for the day, we hear the engines of school buses passing by instead of the fan's endless whirring or the air conditioner's incessant hum.  We leave the oven door open after pulling the golden blueberry muffins out, just to get a bit more warm air in the room.  And when we head out the door, we grab a scarf or a sweatshirt, just in case.

We dig out the crockpot instead of lighting up the grill.  Candlelight emerges once again, starting at suppertime and soothing us with its warm glow and gentle fragrance as the coolness of evening descends and another day comes to a close.

And as we chat back and forth, catching up with the day's details, we realize that our nightcaps have morphed from ice cream sundaes into steaming mugs of hot cocoa with whipped cream on top ... as we hunker under an old quilt or two.

I'm leaning right into it all.

September?  No way!

These first golden days of the 9th month, this little pocket of transition time tucked right between sultry summer days and autumn's gently falling leaves?  This is my yearly sweet spot.  These brief diminutive moments are a unique season of their very own.

I can't say I'm ready for it yet.

The kids are off and running to school.  The calendars' little square spaces are beginning to fill.  Appointments, meetings, and game schedules collide with book clubs, church stuff, and classes.  And yet the Spirit continues to whisper, 'Be still and know that I am God' {Psalm 46:10}.

If our souls ever needed to linger quietly, to be refilled by the One who designed each splendid season ... it would be right about now.  Even as we begin to embrace this lovely autumn-ish life.

Let's just enjoy each moment ... not looking too far behind or too far into the future.  He's got this.

Porch #29 * 5 Steps to Move You Forward

Welcome back to Porch, your go-to weekend companion.  Discover a fresh perspective.  Energize your mind.  Scoop up some spiritual sustenance.  Get unstuck.  Share your story.

Friends, buckle up.  Ready or not, 2022 has arrived.

What could be healthier and holier than approaching the year ahead with a clean slate.  A no regrets lifestyle.  A courageous choice to rid ourselves of all those woulda-coulda-shouda's that act like quicksand, pulling us down and leaving us feeling like failures.

If ever we needed to be purposeful, it'd be right about now.

Instead of barreling headfirst into whatever's out there, how 'bout we take time to sift through the last 12 months.  Fully understand the victories, the disasters, the accomplishments, the pain.  Celebrate who God is and the provisions that have come from His hand.  Name our fears and failures and sorrows.  Confess our attitude problems and sins.  Forgive and ask for forgiveness.  Appreciate the gifts and opportunities He's given us.  Acknowledge daily provisions and graces.  Come to some measure of peace about what we've lived through.

In the process, we:
1.  Aim to release our accumulated why questions.

2.  Ask God what He's inviting us to.

3.  Listen to the still small Voice for clear direction.

4.  Claim the fresh calling, verses, OneWord, goals, resolutions, song He's whispering to us.

5.  Chose to move ahead with a clear head and an open heart.

A few resources to help you discern your own unique focus:

If your load is complex and heavy, a counselor, support group or workbook just might be the ticket.  Click here to get an idea of what's available to you.  No one says you have to line all your ducks in a row by the first week of January.  If you need a season to move further toward healing, please give that grace and space to yourself.

So don’t be anxious about tomorrow.
God will take care of your tomorrow too.
Live one day at a time.
- Matthew 6:34 -

One day at a time.

It's become my mantra.  The breath I breathe.  The song I sing.  The promise I've claimed.  I've said it a million times in the last three years and am continuing to learn how to live it out in this disruptive, disturbing season.

Loosening my grip on every loved one.  Every question.  Every opinion.  Every agenda.

Embracing Jesus' words in Matthew 6 has freed me up and lightened my load.  It's kept me from thinking I've got all the answers.  Looking too far ahead.  Entertaining every worst case scenario and giving it free rein to endlessly play on repeat in my head.

One day at a time has freed me from anxiety's death-grip.  It's giving me a right perspective.  It's equipping me to reach out.

So that's my focus for 2022.  Again.

This is the first day of the rest of your life
'Cause even in the dark, you can still see the light
It's gonna be alright, it's gonna be alright
Sing it here!

One Day at a Time,
Linda
