September?  No way!

These first golden days of the 9th month, this little pocket of transition time tucked right between sultry summer days and autumn's gently falling leaves?  This is my yearly sweet spot.  These brief diminutive moments are a unique season of their very own.

I can't say I'm ready for it yet.

The kids are off and running to school.  The calendars' little square spaces are beginning to fill.  Appointments, meetings, and game schedules collide with book clubs, church stuff, and classes.  And yet the Spirit continues to whisper, 'Be still and know that I am God' {Psalm 46:10}.

If our souls ever needed to linger quietly, to be refilled by the One who designed each splendid season ... it would be right about now.  Even as we begin to embrace this lovely autumn-ish life.

Let's just enjoy each moment ... not looking too far behind or too far into the future.  He's got this.

  1. I like that phrase "little pockets of transition time." That's what it is like here, too. It won't feel like fall for a few weeks yet, but we've had some little glimpses of not quite so hot temperatures. I'm looking forward to cool fall breezes.

Without kids in school, our fall calendar is not nearly as busy as it used to be. August was quite full for us, September will be a little less so. Then October will be a nice respite before Thanksgiving and Christmas.

  3. I found Sara Bessey's latest piece about Tozer interesting and important. I've read a couple of the books on your list that I've recommended to many. It's a joy to see what you're sharing with us as I know it's always good. ♡ - Debby

    1. Yes, Sarah's reflections on ministry's impact on the pastor's family is a must-read. Lots of cause for pause there. I've talked with too many 'Mrs. Tozers' along the way.

Thanks for the encouraging words about the book lists, Debby. I love pulling this together, but it's taking up alot of time and there hasn't been the interest I thought there might be. I'm thinking about pulling the plug on it.

We're given only so much focused energy each day. I'm not sure if this is the wisest use of mine.

  4. I liked the picture of the kids in the car and their happiness and excitement. Of course I hope they don't drive like that! Then came the song Try to Remember and it brought back so many memories of fun times - getting ready for school, how much we loved the activities and busyness of a fall calendar. The happy and carefree days. Those days are gone, but it is nice to remember the freedom from worry and joy of looking forward.

  6. Linda, After 3 sweltering summer months in the South -- I am so ready to transition to fall. September is the perfect gateway month. After months of feeling like a slug, I come back to life when the hint of fall is in the air. As always, great stopping by your porch.
    Blessings,
    Bev xx

  7. I know, I know - September?? already?? I feel so blessed to savor the wonderful summer I have had - that is my memory. But when I pause I recall the emotional ups and downs, the sadness, too. It's all life, isn't it? yet the seasons arrive on time and so does God. Somehow the rhythm of the seasons comfort and sustain me. Welcome September!

So beautifully said, Jean. I'm still learning to appreciate that God's plans are never late and never early. He knows exactly what we need and when ... maybe that's why He created the seasons to come slowly but surely, one right after the other.

  10. A black walnut(?) tree in our backyard is the last to leaf in the spring and the first to turn yellow in the fall. This year the transformation-to-gold has begun earlier than usual, it seems. The slightest breeze creates a shower of sunflakes! (Isn't that a glorious word-picture for fall leaves? I borrowed it from a poem I read years ago.) That tree, and cooler temps in the early morning, have put me in the mood for fall. Thank you for reminding me of MyQuillyn Smith's blog. She provides great ideas for decorating on a budget!

  14. Over here in our corner of the world where summers are forever, I can imagine how much faster time would seem to fly when a season ends and another follows.

Beautiful photos as always, Linda. Especially the first one.

    Hugs and blessings!

  16. Its been toonhot here in my part of Arizona to think about fall yet. It appears our monsoons are winding down. I'm looking forward to taking out my fall decor. Fall is my favorite time of year with the exception of Halloween.
