I'm up, up, and away in the Adirondack mountains this week. It's crisp and gray, frigid and snowy. All is calm, all is bright. I've come to retreat, yet I'm armed with books to finish, posts to write, a stack of magazines to page through. My Bible, a journal, a coloring book, a handful of gel pens aren't far from reach.
One thing I've learned over time is that we can make all the plans we want, but the Lord has a way of upending and re-ordering our days so that His purposes can be fulfilled.
My purpose? To rest and to create and to plan. Yet I'm prepared to toss all my preconceived notions to the wind and pay attention to His whispered sacred agenda.
ADVENT OPEN HOUSE
I'm ready to roll into my 2nd Annual Advent Photo-A-Day here on the blog. Last year, I found the weeks leading up to Christmas so much more purposeful, peaceful, and profitable than expected as my mind became focused on each day's Advent Whispers post. And wonder of wonders, my heart filled with anticipation and joy in the process of waiting for Jesus in ways that I hadn't experienced before.
December became an oasis instead of a madhouse. The daily rhythms turned out to be hope-giving, not a must-do. When all was said and done, writer and readers blessed each other with our calming dialogue. It was a spiritually heartening experience for me.
This year, I'm calling the gathering an Advent Open House. Each day I'll be sharing a simple photo and just a few words, Scripture, a prayer, or a song. Let's see where the Spirit leads.
I'll be opening the doors this Sunday, the 2nd, and continuing through Christmas Day. I hope you'll find your visits to be a gently peaceful oasis, a bit of needed white space, and a calming grace in the crazyness of planning, shopping, decorating, wrapping, caroling, baking, cooking, and get-togethers.

ReplyDeleteI hope the daily graces will encourage you, Bill, in this your busiest season of the year ...
DeleteIt will be a joy to receive daily snippets to prepare us for the season. I pray your time in the Adirondacks is exactly what it needs to be.

So excited about the Advent Open House, Linda! I might miss some of the first week as Danny and I are "escaping" to the mountains for a week while his brother stays with MIL, but I will be sure to tune in as soon as I can.
ReplyDeleteSending blessings your way!
We'll be here when you return, Martha! Enjoy every second with your man ...
DeleteI hope your time this week is productive and peaceful, and I look forward to your posts during Advent. It sounds like a great way to slow down and focus!
ReplyDeleteIt's been a good week, Lesley. Internet is kind of spotty which isn't a big surprise up in this neck of the woods.
DeleteBut it never hurts to unplug, does it ...
I'm glad you were able to get away and have some time of reflection. The pictures are beautiful and they exude peacefulness!
ReplyDeleteI'd like to exude peacefulness ... all the time!
DeleteI look forward to the 'white' space you'll be sharing! I'm all about Breathing Spaces as I think you know. And of course sharing our places through photos so we can add beauty to other peoples places too! Your retreat sounds fabulous. What a wonderful way to start this season.
ReplyDeleteEven the words 'white space' make me breathe deep ...

I find myself wanting to click on every single link here, Linda! So I'm off to do some reading. :) Thanks again for the book!
ReplyDeleteOh that makes me happy, Lisa ...
DeleteI hope you have a lot of quiet time with God to "pay attention to His whispered sacred agenda," Linda. I'm looking forward to your Advent Open House. :) I remember how much I enjoyed last year's photos, etc. Advent blessings and hugs to you!
ReplyDeleteYou always come laden with encouragement, friend. Just the fuel I need as we get the party started!
DeleteYou're equipped with a Bible, coloring books, pens, journals, etc. I feel like a kindred sister. That's my kind of hunkering down in the mountains. Enjoy! :)
ReplyDeleteI never touched the coloring book or pens. But otherwise, yes, yes, yes!
DeleteLinda, I love that you are leaving yourself open to God's agenda and I'd love to hear how He showed up for you during this special time.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, the Advent Photo a Day sounds like a wonderful idea.
Blessings to you this Advent season.
He simply spoke peace.
DeleteI'm grateful!
And I'm so glad you're here with me this weekend, Marva ...
